One procedure often leads to another, particularly with interpositional arthroplasty of the first carpometacarpal joint. Few services performed in the ASC setting exhibit as many variations in surgical techniques as this one. However, not all techniques can be accurately reported using the standard CPT codes 25447 and 26480. To code correctly, it is essential to first understand the basic procedure and what constitutes an “interpositional” arthroplasty. Additionally, the suspension aspect of the service—which is not included in the basic CMC interpositional arthroplasty—can be reported separately. It is crucial to consider the specific techniques used in performing the overall service to ensure compliance with CPT coding.
